Issues

The Republican Party has many positions in their official platform. While we support all of those we choose to place a special focus on Michigan State University and those issues that are especially important to students. Right now we are focusing on the following:

Healthcare

Over the past few months you are probably living under a rock if you have not heard about ObamaCare. The MSU College Republicans feel that any reform to the healthcare system should adhere to the following principles:

  • Opening the market - insurance regulations should be universal across the nation, instead of being regulated at the state level. By creating a larger market we would be able to create a more competitive market.
  • Limiting frivolous lawsuits - It is an unfortunate fact of healthcare and of life that bad things happen to good people. In any legislation we would like to see compensation for malpractice law suites limited, unless it can be proven the doctor had acted in bad faith.
  • Limited Government Interference - The MSU College Republicans will not endorse any plan that calls for the creation of a Public Healthcare option that competes with the private sector or dictates how insurance companies provide coverage.

Freedom of Speech

The MSU College Republicans have often been the target of other organizations on campus or the Administration for not conforming to their agenda. The most recent attempt at this is through charges of "discrimination" by the office of inclusion due to "hate speech". After fighting with the University for about a year a 82 page report was released that concluded the MSU College Republicans had not violated any policy. It is because of actions like this that Michigan State University has received a Red Light rating from www.TheFIRE.org.

Global Warming/Climate Change

If you are a student at MSU it is almost seems like a forgone conclusion that the world is coming to an end due to Global Warming. The biggest concern that we have is the lack of scientific debate. This is not because there is a consensus, but rather because those that bring up points to the contrary strong armed into getting into line with what is perceived to be the dominate point of view.

What has made the country great and allowed for innovation is allowing minds to think freely and purse "radical" ideas. The MSU College Republicans plan to hold events and films to explore the truth behind Global Warming.
